Al Ittihad snatch crown after amazing recovery
FIFA.com 06 Dec 2004
It will go down as one of the most remarkable comebacks in Asian football history. Saudi Arabia's Al Ittihad walked into a hostile atmosphere at Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma's packed stadium in Seoul on 1 December 3-1 down from the first leg and with a coach five days into his job. Ninety-four minutes later the 26,000 crowd had long been silenced as Manaf Aboshair curled in the Saudi Arabian side's fifth strike without reply completing an amazing 6-3 aggregate victory and picking up Asia's grandest football trophy - the Champions League.
"I am the happiest man on the planet now," said Dragan Talajic, the Croat coach who replaced Tomislav Ivic following the side's shock 1-3 loss to the Koreans in the opening leg of the final in Jeddah. "This is a dream come true. To be coach of the Asian champions at the age of 39 is unbelievable - and in my first game in charge!"
The result sent shockwaves throughout Asia and the rest of the world. Before the match many had feared that the Saudi team, arriving in Korea's bitter winter and with injuries to boot, would suffer a heavy defeat. But Al Ittihad, who had defeated another Korean side, Chonbuk Motors, in the semi-finals and Chinese League winners Dalian Shide in the quarters, responded to adversity like true champions.
Early pressure
After surviving early pressure from the home side, Talajic's charges struck just before half time as defender Redha Tukar climbed high at a corner to thunder in a header. So confident had Seongnam's veteran coach Cha Kyoung-nok been before the game, he had even talked about next year's competition and the dream chance to play at the FIFA Club World Championship 2005.
But the early strike seemed to upset his side and the six-time Saudi league champions hit the target again, crucially as Talajic was later to point out, seconds before the break. Hamad Al Montashari knocked back Chico's curled free kick for Hamzah Idris to bundle the ball home and tie up the aggregate score 3-3.
"The second goal was crucial for us," the former international goalkeeper emphasised. "When the players came into the dressing room, they knew that their task was possible…but I had to calm them down because everyone was so excited."
Ten minutes into the second period and the West Asian team were in front overall. Idris found Manaf Abushgeer who crossed for Mohammad Noor to steer in a superb third.
Freezing
The 2003 K-League champions, who domestically had finished a dismal ninth this season, were now shellshocked. As the sound of groans intensified in the stands, their attempts to get back in the game became more and more desperate, leaving holes at the back that were perfectly exploited by captain Noor (78) for his second and Aboshair with virtually the last kick of the match.
"At this point, all I can say is that my players froze," said Cha later, pointing out his team had conceded just once at home throughout the competition. "There are some young players in the team and I think they were nervous playing in front of so many people. Perhaps there was just too much pressure on them because everybody expected them to win."
Having successfully convinced his players to retain their calm in the second period, Cha's counterpart could not contain his own joy in the post-match press conference.
"After the first game, I think that only crazy people thought that we would win the game, let alone the trophy," said Talajic on the verge of tears. "I guess people must now say I am crazy because I really did think we could do something special here."
